Common Food Allergy Symptoms

Food allergy symptoms vary from person to person, for the fact that no one is exactly the same. Food allergy symptoms occur when your body’s antibodies began to battle against the threatening ingredient. Symptoms of the food allergies are not limited to but may include:

Rashes/hives – Hives are flat-topped bumps that are typically red. They can be extremely itchy and most of the time, they are accompanied by a burning sensation. The bumps range in size and can appear anywhere on your body, including your face. A hives rash can last for weeks in severe cases, if you have a mild outbreak, they may only last for several hours. There’s a variety of ways to treat hives, be sure to consult with your doctor before taking measures into your own hands.

Nausea – Nausea is an extreme discomfort that occurs in the upper part of your stomach with a spontaneous urge to vomit. Nausea does not always result in vomiting. Most cases of nausea are not serious, as in life-threatening however, there are medications that can be prescribed if your case becomes serious.

Diarrhea – Diarrhea is where you have 3 or more liquid bowel movements per day. This is a very common symptom of food allergies. This is also one of the most serious symptoms, as it can be fatal. In 2009 over one million people died from diarrhea. If diarrhea is something that frequently occurs because of your food allergies, it’s important to be more careful and read food labels. Some medications can be prescribed for the treatment of diarrhea.

Anaphylaxis – Anaphylaxis is a serious symptom of food allergies which includes itchiness, throat swelling and low blood pressure. This allergic reaction could result in death. It’s advisable to always be prepared with some type of action plan if this should ever happen to you. It’s very important to consult your family doctor for the precise measures to take.

Other symptoms of allergic reactions to food are: stomach pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, the swelling of the airways to the lungs and itchy skin.

Every symptom listed here can easily be avoided if you simply take the time out to pay close attention to the ingredients contained within the foods that you consume. Notifying others who are close to you may also be helpful, so that they are aware of which foods you can and can't consume. More importantly, so that they can get you the proper help if you shall ever need it.
